Ever have a goal that is just too damn hard? Job? Kids? Marriage? Here are some questions to aks yourself:
- What is my goal? What is my commitment?
If your goal and your commitment do not align, revisit them.
Once your commitment is aligned with your goal, next ask:
- Where are my thoughts not in alignment with my goal?
- Where are my words not in alignment with my goal?
- Where are my actions not in alignment with my goal?
When goals aren’t working, notice if one or more of the above are out of alignment. Once you’ve found an out of alignment area, the next question becomes:
- How can I change my thoughts to be in alignment with my goal?
- How can I change my words to be in alignment with my goal?
- How can I change my actions to be in alignment with my goal?
The reason we behave in ways that are at cross-purposes to our goals is because it is comfortable. The reason we fail to take on a behavior that will assist our goals is because we are afraid that the new behavior will come at a price. But the truth is, we pay a price either way. The price we are paying now is our goals aren’t working, and I’d argue that that is a higher price to pay than whatever it is we’re afraid of.
As a follow on, it is easy to think that I need to achieve my goals myself, no help. Well, it’s silly to believe in the “self-made man”… I know I wouldn’t last long without all the people that grow, ship and sell me food, make clothing, supply fuel, etc. Same with goals: reach out to someone, going it alone is mostly myth.
